Root cellaring, as many people remember but only a few people still practice, is a way of using the earth's naturally cool, stable temperature to store perishable fruits and vegetables. Root cellaring, as Mike and Nancy Bubel explain here, is a no-cost, simple, low-technology, energy-saving way to keep the harvest fresh all year long. In Root Cellaring, the Bubels tell how to successfully use this natural storage approach. It's the first book devoted entirely to the subject, and it covers the subject with a thoroughness that makes it the only book you'll ever need on root cellaring. Root Cellaring will tell you: * How to choose vegetable and fruit varieties that will store best * Specific individual storage requirements for nearly 100 home garden crops * How to use root cellars in the country, in the city, and in any environment * How to build root cellars, indoors and out, big and small, plain and fancy * Case histories -- reports on the root cellaring techniques and experiences of many households all over North America Root cellaring need not be strictly a country concept. Though it's often thought of as an adjunct to a large garden, a root cellar can in fact considerably stretch the resources of a small garden, making it easy to grow late succession crops for storage instead of many rows for canning and freezing. Best of all, root cellars can easily fit anywhere. Not everyone can live in the country, but everyone can benefit from natural cold storage.

I guess you have to "build" your own root cellar. I thought there'd be tips on using existing space like a basement. It would be illegal for us to dig up one here in the city.
Good book and well organized. It covered everything I wanted to know about cold storage of produce and other foods. It helped me make decisions about how and where to store our garden's bounty. We managed to grow 450 pounds of winter squash this year, 150 pounds of potatoes and 15 pounds of garlic! The book has encouraged me to try growing & storing cabbages, carrots, and onions next year.
Great book that is well organized starting with good gardening tips, all the small details in between, to all the ways to create a cellar! There is even a chapter of experiences from different people with different ways they did they root cellars and recipes at the end. This book left me feeling very inspired and definitely gave me ideas of how to.
This books cover so much! It covers different root-cellar methods even if you don't have a traditional root cellar...it gives lots of ideas for creating storage places. The book even covers 'good keeper' varieties., and an example of a month by month year-round eating plan using fresh, frozen, canned, and stored foods. And even gives some advice on how to determine how much you need to store for your family. A useful book.
This book has everything! Every detail I couldn't find anywhere else, several fixes to each problem that might happen, more options of root cellars than I would have ever though existed, planning from planting to storing. Even recipies!
This is a basic book about storing produce in a root cellar. I purchased a kindle edition, which was probably a mistake on my part. This is a reference and it would have had more value to me if I'd been able to page back-and-forth, scribble things in the margins, etc. That said, I did learn quite a bit about storage requirements for vegetables. It turns out that it simply does not get cold enough where I live to have much of a usable root cellar. So, at very least, the book prevented me from putting in a lot of time, effort, and expense to put something together that probably wouldn't perform that well.
Learning to live in a rural area means learning to get along w/out some of the conviances of a nearby grocery store. This books makes saving home grown or CSA food more realistic.
This book is so earthy. Even the sketchy drawings are just where I live and how I think. Of course they tell me exactly what to do and how to keep the food I've grown so we can eat it all winter long. It does that very well and includes lots of different vegetables and how to take care of them. But the book just feels like a root cellar and I love that!
Purchased for my husband. He thinks it is absolutely awesome. It has practical information about preserving food easily without needing to can or freeze it by storing it in a root cellar. It is one of his most favorite books that I find him constantly getting off the bookshelf. Many times it doesn't make it back on the shelf. If you are looking for information on storing food in a root cellar, he would highly recommend this book!
